As the summer heats up, there’s no better way to cool off than with a refreshing ice cream sundae. National Ice Cream Day seems to have been created to encourage just that—this quirky holiday happens every year on the third Sunday of July, one of the hottest months of the year in the US. July 16th marks this year’s ice cream celebration, and we’re inspired to get creative with our frozen treats for the occasion. Check out some of our favorite ideas!
Host an ice cream social
Throw it back to the sock-hop days with a retro ice cream social. Keep ice cream flavors basic to create the perfect base for fun toppings. Stick to vanilla, chocolate, and a fruity sorbet. Create a station with lots of toppings, spoons, serving cups, and napkins. Add an ice bucket of glass-bottled soda for a nostalgic feel. We love this whimsical ice cream social theme by Giggles Galore.
Make your own
Homemade ice cream is fresh, delicious, and easy to make. Look for no-churn recipes if you don’t have access to an ice cream maker. All it takes is a cream base, some added flavors, and a few hours in the freezer. We think this blackberry ice cream recipe is just the right mix of fruity and sweet.
Freeze your desserts
Go beyond the basic scoop and get creative with ice cream treats. Sandwich ice cream between two cookies, make creamy popsicles, or make a cake sundae. The options are endless and oh-so-cool.
