Give your Halloween pumpkin carving technique a major upgrade this year. Not only do we have all the tips and tricks you'll need to carve and decorate your jack-o'-lanterns like a pro, but we've also put together a fun gallery of printable pumpkin carving stencils.
Here's what you'll need:
Prep the Pumpkin.
Before you take a carving knife to your pumpkin, prepare it by wiping off any dirt or debris on the exterior that was leftover from the patch. Make sure the pumpkin is at room temperature before you begin carving.
Start by drawing a circle around the stem and cut around it with a keyhole saw to create the pumpkin lid. Then, using the spoon, dig into the pumpkin and remove the pulp and seeds. This is a great job for young kids to handle. (And don't forget to save the seeds to make this seasonal snack). Scrape the inner walls until they are no more than 1-inch thick. The thinner the walls, the easier it will be to carve.
Plan Your Printable Stencil.
Scale your stencil to fit the size of the pumpkin. This can be done by using a photocopier to enlarge or shrink the design. Don't have a pattern in mind? Download our free pumpkin carving printables here. Designed for all skill levels, these stencils can help give your gang of jack-o'-lanterns the perfect personality. Once you have the printable the right size, tape the pattern on the pumpkin. Then using the push pins, transfer the design onto the pumpkin.
Carve Your Creation.
Now, use a carving knife, follow the outline created by the push pins. Once you've finished carving, place a tealight in the bottom of the pumpkin and proudly display on your home's front porch.
